I got the same impression too, Phil. I've been an editor about 2 or 3 months, and haven't gotten into a category that I can submit my own sites.

I am. And several more people posting in this forum.

Not me.
But anyone listed as editor on that category is + every editor listed in categories from Arts down to Arts..DJs + every editor with an editall status or higher (see http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/editall/ )
Knowing which people can edit in this category won't give you any information as you still don't know (and neither do the DMOZ editors) who will be doing the review of a site suggested to that category. Neither do we know when this will happen.

The editors are given random sites to review? I am a editor for musicmoz.org, but the system lets me edit any site that applies for my category. DMOZ does it randomly?

NO you are only allowed to edit in your category unless and until you are promoted to a category which includes subcats or are made an editall.

I don't know where you got this wrong information.
DMOZ editors can review all sites suggested in the categories they have access to. They can however review sites in any order they wish, and this order can be random.

I have had success in contacting the editors of the category in which I have a submission pending and getting them to take a look at it after I mention that I have followed the guidelines and the style in that category.

If navigate to the category you are interested in you will find the links to the editors profiles listed at the bottom of the page.

If there are categories which do not have editors listed normally one level higher will list editors who can also edit the subcats.

They don't provide a service for websites - only for users of their data.

Lets see I think the standard formula involves the full moon and a bit of withcraft, using plenty of moonshine and grease, but that may be beyond the scope of this forum.

Pretty hard to become a DMOZ editor.. I tried for 2 times in the past when I had spare time but didn't succed... and I completed the forms pretty right. The problem is that my english is not 100% perfect.. so who knows maybe I got rejected for my written english that I used in completing the application form. Anyway I won't try again ever... no more time for free volunteering.

I am kind of confused with DMOZ, sometimes there are working most times not.. I have applied to be an editor but have yet to receive any response.. Nothing!
I submitted a site to them over a year ago and its still not listed.. I wonder how important DMOZ really is?

It all depends on which field you think it should be important.

Is it important for website promotion? No. DMOZ does not want to be important in promoting websites and any effect is has in this field is just a side-effect of what they want to do.

Is it important for finding websites? Yes, but it certainly is not the only improtant source and also it is not the most important source. But it has very good use for finding specific types of informative websites.

Reasons to become an editor are never altruistic. People go after such a title with dishonorable intentions and as a result you end up with a dsyfunctional directory which never lives up to its hype.

Are you speaking from experience or lack of listings? Yes DMOZ has its problems to be sure, and the list of editors is riddled with self agrandizing idiots, and any directory is kind of an antique concept as far as being of any use to searchers BUT

as directories go its one of the biggest and its the basis of Googles directory so on that count alone a listing is worth something.

dmoz's days are numbered. Besides getting some link juice it has no value!
